A MAN took out an insurance policy worth C$100,000 (now about HK$585,000) for his wife seven months before she was burned to death in a car which he claimed she was helping him repair, the High Court heard yesterday.
The body of Gloria Mak Wai-ngor, 40, was found in the rear seat of the vehicle and not behind the wheel, where defendant Chan Sai-kit claimed she had been. An expert believed she was not in the car at the time the fire started, the court heard.
Chan, 44, a Canadian citizen and trained motor mechanic, has denied murdering Mak on October 23, 1989, in Tuen Mun, maintaining that the death was an accident. He is being tried by a jury before Mr Justice Wong.
Prosecutor Gary Alderdice QC, said in his opening address the couple had been married for 10 years at the time of the incident.
In a taped phone conversation in October or November 1986, Mak accused her husband of adultery and wanting to murder her, Mr Alderdice said.
Chan replied that there would be no evidence of murder if the body disappeared and he would not be prosecuted, counsel said.
