Police are looking into a possible case of school violence captured on film after a newspaper reported the incident on Wednesday.

A 22-second video clip filmed at CMA Secondary School in Shekkipmei was e-mailed to the Chinese-language The Sun newspaper.

It showed a thin student being beaten up in a classroom by about 10 classmates. But there were claims that the clip was staged.

A police spokesman said officers had contacted the school, which had launched an internal probe, but he said a formal police investigation had not been initiated.

'The police are very concerned about the incident,' a police statement said.

'The police have taken the initiative in liaising with school management and understand the incident occurred last year.

'We understand that the case was about a group of students who played and chased after a video camera. No one was injured in the incident. The teachers settled the incident themselves.'

The revelation followed a court case this month in which eight students pleaded guilty to assaulting a classmate at a Sheung Shui school after the savage beatings were caught on a video camera, sparking a public outcry.

Mak Oi-ying, the school principal in the latest case, yesterday  confirmed that the video was filmed at her school. She said she first saw it on the internet more than a month ago  after a former student alerted her to it.

After attending a conference on school violence on January 10, she called staff together on January 16 to watch the video, during which a teacher recognised students from one of her previous Form Five classes. The teacher then phoned the victim, who said they were fooling around, Ms Mak said.

The principal said she did not see any bleeding or torn clothing as reported by the newspaper and felt that the students were indeed just fooling around. But she admitted some of the students' behaviour was 'pretty impolite'.

Ms Mak said she did not contact police because the student did not admit being beaten.

Legislator Cheung Man-kwong,  who chairs the Professional Teachers' Union, said the principal should have alerted police when she first saw the clip, saying it should have been up to them to decide its authenticity.
