POP singers were out in force last Sunday at Sha Tin's New Town Plaza to help promote a charity drive in the district.

The event, Tung Wah Charity Day, was part of fund-raising activities of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals' (TWGHs) free medical services donation scheme. And on hand to give the campaign a boost were pop singers Hacken Lee, Vivian Chow, Nicky Wu, Julian Cheung, Maple Hui as well as disc jockeys from Commercial Radio 1.

The TWGHs, in conjunction with Commercial Radio (CR), has been organising a number of events to raise funds for its free beds and out-patient services.

Speaking at a recent press conference, TWGHs chairman Mr Jackie Wong said this was the fifth joint effort between the group and Commercial Radio. Money collected helps to maintain the group's tradition of free medical services, the cost of which is estimated to be $25 million for the 1993/94 year.

Apart from sending out a large number of appeal letters in July, the group has been organising a number of fund-raisers for the four-month campaign, from July to October.

A charity premiere, The Bride with White Hair , was held last month. In another event, pop singer Sally Yeh donated part of her concert takings early last month.
