We use adjectives all the time. They are one of the first things we learn about when we study English.
An adjective describes and modifies a noun (the noun can be a person, an object, a place, etc). It tells the readers about the characteristics of the noun. For example, 'congested Bangkok' tells us that Bangkok is a very busy city.
However, an adjective sometimes comprises more than one word. In some cases it contains two or more words. This kind of adjective is called a compound adjective. (ie. made up of two or more parts.)
A compound adjective is usually linked by hyphens, which help readers understand that the whole unit acts as an adjective.
However, be careful not to use too many words in a compound adjective.
The following are all compound adjectives in the story: cut-price competition, low-cost carriers, low-income Thais, lower-price market.
