A vote for stability
An overseas Chinese who has lived here for quite some time, I totally support a one-man-one-vote system for Hong Kong.
It is very important for future economic prosperity. And I believe that Hong Kong is ready for democracy.
A high percentage of people in Hong Kong are educated and they can analyse and choose the leadership they want. This is quite a sophisticated society with a structure similar to that of Singapore. Hong Kong is an international financial and trading centre, and universal suffrage here would enhance China's reputation.
I do not advocate one man, one vote for the mainland at present. The mainland is not ready for this. When exactly it will be ready, I do not know.
The world admires the fine efforts of China's leaders in generating jobs and economic prosperity globally over the last few decades. I believe that the remuneration received by the present leadership is too low bearing in mind what they have done for their countrymen and compared to the pay in Hong Kong. The world needs this kind of leadership - even though China's leaders are not elected through one man, one vote.
These leaders should not feel that one man, one vote in Hong Kong would destabilise the mainland, as the political system here is different. Mainland citizens understand that Hong Kong is governed by the Basic Law, a unique legal concept. If one man, one vote here would destabilise the mainland politically, I would withdraw my support for it.
