WHAT IS HONG KONG'S HERITAGE?

The review of heritage conservation policies outlined both the existing criteria for preservation and alternative criteria

These buildings are preserved as monuments

They are among the 60 designated buildings which have been protected because:

* They are associated with historical events or figures

* They represent the architectural style of a particular period

* They display excellence in building techniques

* They have retained their original form

Government House:

Established in 1855 as the residence for colonial governors. Now a

venue for official functions.

The Court of Final Appeal Building:

Built in 1917, it was formerly the French Mission Building.

Central Magistracy:

Established in 1914. It was closed in 1979 and is now used by different associations affiliated to the police.

Lee Tung Street (Wedding Card street), Wan Chai:

Home to the wedding invitation industry for more than 30 years.

Nga Tsin Wai walled village:

A 13th-century walled village. About 100 to 200 people still live in the 30 to 40 houses remaining there.

Graham Street, Central:

A street built in the 1840s now occupied by market stalls, leading from Central to Mid-Levels.

Are these also worth preserving?

The consultation paper asks whether buildings or other areas with distinct characters - but without architectural merit or historical significance - are worth preserving as heritage monuments. It

suggested possible criteria such as:

* They are part of Hong Kong's collective memory 

* They display special characteristics

* They are representative of a traditional way of life
