The alleged attacker, believed to be an  ex-PLA officer, helps reconstruct one of the crimes

A suspected serial killer linked to a series of attacks on prostitutes over the past three months took police to the scene of one of the crimes yesterday as they conducted a reconstruction.

Handcuffed, hooded and with a chain wrapped around his waist, the 35-year-old mainlander, surnamed Tsang, was surrounded by more than a dozen police.

He led the officers to an apartment on Fuk Wing Street, Shamshuipo, where a 37-year-old sex worker was strangled on February 12.

Her death came after a 39-year-old prostitute was also found strangled in her flat in Pei Ho Street on January 5.

On December 5, a 39-year-old sex worker was seriously injured by a man who tried to strangle her in her flat in Cheung Sha Wan during an apparent robbery attempt.

The suspect, believed to be a former People's Liberation Army officer, took police to the flat at 3pm.

A dummy was used during the reconstruction of the crime, which was video recorded.

After about 30 minutes in the flat, the suspect led police officers to a nearby public park, where two rubbish bins were searched. Evidence was taken away.

Police believe that the suspect came to Hong Kong on a two-way permit, but was a overstayer. He lived in Lo Uk Tsuen, the small village in Yuen Long where he was arrested.

He is believed to have made his living there as a hairdresser.

Village representative Law Kin-on said the suspect told him he was originally from Guangxi and was a PLA officer in Zhuhai.

The man's wife and one-year-old child live in Zhuhai, Mr Law said.

Yesterday's reconstruction came after Tsang and another man, 49, were arrested on Saturday.

A police source said that investigations had revealed that the other man - a friend of Tsang's - was apparently unconnected with the crimes. He was released on police bail last night.

Tsang, however, was being detained overnight for further questioning.

Lo Kai-wah, Chief Inspector of West Kowloon, Regional Crime Unit said: 'During our investigation, we believed that one of the suspects was involved in two murder cases and a robbery case. We also found that another two-way permit woman had had the same experience' That woman, aged 37, was attacked by a man who tried to strangle her in a different flat in Fuk Wing Street in November. However, she did not report the case to police. The case was uncovered during police interviews with more than 100 sex-workers in Shamshuipo conducted since the second murder.
