Police are investigating a mainland website claiming to have insider information about which numbers would be drawn in Hong Kong's Mark Six lottery.

The website was discovered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club yesterday - one of about 60 similar fraudulent websites discovered on the mainland and Taiwan in the past year.

The most recent discovery, www.66699.com, could still be accessed last night, inviting punters to pay between 4,800 and 8,800 yuan to become members. The site said it would provide the coming draw's winning numbers.

Jockey Club spokesman Wilson Cheng Kwok-ming said no one could predict which numbered balls would tumble out of the container to pick a Mark Six number.

He said the club reported the discovery to the police, but added that it was difficult to crack down on overseas websites, which constantly switch their addresses.

'These websites usually stay active for a few weeks, and  disappear after people have fallen victims to their scams,' he said.

The www.66699.com website claimed it had 'spent a large amount of money' to obtain the information. It also clamed it had been officially approved by the Jockey Club.

The operators promised they would refund members if the numbers they provided were not drawn.

The Jockey Club said such fraudulent websites were usually found on the mainland - especially in Guangzhou - and Taiwan.

'They don't operate in Hong Kong because people here are more familiar with the Mark Six's operations and would not fall for their tricks,' said Mr Cheng.

The club stressed it had only one official website - www.hongkongjockeyclub.com - and had no agents or websites overseas.

Police from the Commercial Crime Bureau were investigating the club's complaint and say they would liaise with mainland authorities to track down the fraudsters.
