Senior Beijing adviser Tsang Hin-chi interrupted a speech on development in the Pearl River Delta to sing a patriotic Communist Party song last night.
Mr Tsang broke into his rendition of No Communist Party, No New China, accompanied by many audience members, after responding to another attack by veteran pro-democracy activist Leung Kwok-hung during an open forum in Mongkok earlier. Mr Leung, who last week tried to storm the office of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce - of which Mr Tsang is chairman - said the Beijing adviser was not qualified to lecture the pro-democracy camp. Mr Tsang, a member of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, has recently accused Democratic Party members Martin Lee Chu-ming and Szeto Wah of being unpatriotic.
But at last night's reception of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce in Wan Chai, Mr Tsang insisted he could say what he wanted.
'It's all right for you to criticise me. But you cannot cause trouble at the chamber of commerce,' he said, referring to Mr Leung.
