Your reader was complaining about the junk faxes he or she received day and night (Technology, February 17). It is ridiculous that there seems to be nothing we can do about the companies that send the faxes. In many parts of the developed world you can at least send them a warning letter and demand compensation.
Having experienced this nuisance myself, here are my suggestions:
1. Change the phone number. This will usually get rid of a lot of junk. It seems fax numbers are on spam lists just like e-mail.
2. Use fax software such as Winfax to receive all faxes. This is a good option if you have a PC on all the time. It saves on paper, and you can eventually block the junk faxes with the facilities provided with the software.
What can you do if you want to get revenge on these low-level forms of life who waste your time, money, fax paper and toner? My preferred way is to find their fax number and either use one of the free web-to-fax gateways and send them a 10-page document, or Winfax a 100-page document with the words: 'STOP SPAMMING ME'
Let them suffer the way they make us suffer.
