Legislators have called for more time to debate the government's plans to privatise the airport, after a 30-minute session yesterday ended before all members could ask their questions.
Legco's panel on economic services is scheduled to meet again this morning with Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Stephen Ip Shu-kwan.
Last week, plans were unveiled to restructure the Airport Authority's capital structure and raise its level of indebtedness, by having the authority borrow $6 billion to buy back some of the government's shares. The government aims to recoup its $37 billion investment in the airport by allowing the Airport Authority to privatise.
Mr Ip and his staff had asked that legislators restrict their questions to the capital restructuring plan of the authority, as other aspects of the privatisation proposal were still being developed pending public consultation.
But panel members were still keen to ask about the impact the sale of Chek Lap Kok would have on the community and workers.
'How will the change in ownership affect workers at the airport?' asked Leung Fu-wah, Federation of Trade Unions' legislator.
