Organisers hope to parade 100 of the flashy Italian cars in Sha Tin on Sunday

The Sha Tin racecourse will be home to a different kind of prancing horse on Sunday as the city's  resident Ferraris are mustered in an attempt to set a new world record.

Organisers are hoping to parade at least 100 of the flashy Italian cars in front of Guinness World Records representatives so they can set the mark for the world's largest Ferrari parade.

'This will be the first time that this record has been attempted,' said a spokesman for the Po Leung Kuk charity, which is behind the idea.

The parade will run from the racecourse to Kau To Shan and back.

Aided by the Motor Sports Club of Hong Kong, the Po Leung Kuk is hoping the parade will raise about $1 million for its child sponsorship programme.

Investment banker and confessed Ferrari fanatic Vincent Yum Wai-sing is helping to organise the event.

He said the day  was just what the club was looking for to help raise its community profile.

'We've been around for 50 years, but we've been quite inactive over the last couple of years.  Now we're trying to get involved in a few more promotions,' Mr Yum said.

'We wanted to give car fanatics a chance to come out and play with us so we got together with the Po Leung Kuk and came up with an idea.'

The parade will run along similar lines to the one held for Rolls-Royce owners about 12 years ago.

That not only set the record, with 104 cars, but also raised $1 million for the Po Leung Kuk's work.

There is certainly no lack of potential entrants in Hong Kong.

'As of last year there were about 600 registered Ferraris in Hong Kong, not including crashed ones,' Mr Yum said.

Mr Yum was hopeful that people attending the parade would be able to see some of the rarer models which populate the city. These included a couple of Dinos - designed in tribute to Enzo Ferrari's late son - one or two 275s and some Daytona models.

'Usually the owners of these types of cars love to get them out on show, so we're hoping most of them will participate,' he said.

And it is likely that at least one of four $11 million Enzos already in Hong Kong will be there as well.

'The Enzo really is the king of the Ferrari stable in Hong Kong,' Mr Yum said.

'It should be quite interesting to see some of the more unique cars out and about.

'Every day we are getting more and more in and at the moment we believe we're already there in terms of getting the record, but we're still unsure about the turnout.

'For the charity's sake we hope they not only show up, but sponsor the children as well.'
