HONG Kong tycoon Tsui Tsin-tong will push ahead with the second-phase of the expansion of his Chinese satellite television broadcasts in Europe next year.
London-based Chinese News and Entertainment (CNE), initially named China News Europe, plans to spend more than GBP10 million (HK$120 million) to expand the operation from a three-hour to a 10-hour broadcast next year via the Astra satellite.
CNE was granted a 10-year non-domestic satellite television licence in Britain and launched the service last November with an initial investment of GBP10 million. Mr Tsui holds 75 per cent of the shares.
The group provides free-to-air services.
It broadcasts daily between 1 am and 4 am via Super Channel's Eutelsat, covering 26 countries in Europe.
''The market response has been very encouraging. We have received thousands of letters from our viewers, so we have decided to increase our operation,'' said Betty Yao, general manager of China News Europe.
