THOSE who have closely followed the output of producers/directors/ scriptwriters extraordinaire Johnny Mak and Stephen Shiu (makers of the classics Lonely 15 and Long Arm of the Law ) will know the word mediocrity does not exist in their dictionary.

If their films flop, they do so big time (as the disastrous Lord of the East China Sea has demonstrated). And if they do come up with a hit, in any genre, you know it will be worthwhile if only for its explicit sex or profanity.

Now, though, Shiu has ventured out on his own and overseen a small movie which may be mistaken, at first glance, for a low-budget sex film, because of its title and largely unknown cast.

But Modern Girls is far more than that.

It boasts strong foundations in the triumvirate of Shiu, versatile director Cha Chuen-yee and award-winning screenwriter Chan Man-keung (The Queen of Temple Street ).

It has sex and drama, including a dying woman who gives her boyfriend ''special service'' until she dies.
