Setting a world record was certainly something for more than 500 Hong Kong secondary school students to get their teeth into this week.

They could have bitten off more than they could chew as they set about trying to make the world's longest chain of dental floss, but they gritted their teeth and got on with the job.

The students gathered in Chater Road, Central, last Sunday, and managed to make a 524.4 metre-long chain of dental floss in less than 25 minutes, using 5,800 loops of floss.

The Department of Health, which organised the event to promote its oral health 'Love Teeth Campaign', has now contacted the Guinness Book of Records to register the feat.

Although there have been other world record attempts using dental floss - the last being in November when 1,150 staff and students at a Canadian school used a 2,500-metre continuous piece of dental floss for 45 seconds - this is believed to be the first attempt to construct a chain.
