Tighter safeguards for suspected Sars cases

Suspected Sars cases in Guangdong will be reported simultaneously to the central government and the Department of Health in Hong Kong under a new agreement, Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said yesterday. The agreement was reached after the department voiced its disappointment over belated notification of a confirmed Sars case in the province, he said.

Deferral of plan for new Legco will not hit review

Plans to defer construction of a new Legislative Council building at the Tamar site would not affect the constitutional review, Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said. He told lawmakers the government had not yet decided on the reform proposals and would discuss the need for more space if the number of seats in the legislature was increased.

More than 58 per cent of 764 respondents to a survey carried out by the Democratic Party say they want the government to delay the target for balancing the books by one year, to 2009-10.
