The beach could be developed to meet the growing demand for accommodation on Lantau island
The possibility of turning Cheung Sha, one of the most scenic beaches on Lantau, into a resort area is being explored by a government taskforce on the island's development, sources say.
The taskforce, headed by Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen, is also proposing a new golf course be built near the Disney theme park at Penny's Bay.
A senior government official said the lack of golfing facilities in the area had prompted some people to travel to Guangdong to play the game.
New facilities on Lantau could cater to male travellers with spare time on their hands while their wives were shopping in the city, the official said.
Other proposals announced previously by the taskforce include a logistics park in Tai Ho, a tourism hub in Yam O (Sunny Bay), and leisure and recreational developments in Chi Ma Wan and in northeast Lantau.
New development would further improve Lantau's potential as a tourist haven. The island already boasts the Big Buddha, Tai O fishing village and ongoing projects such as the Disney theme park and Tung Chung cable car link, which will open in the next two years. The cable car system will offer a 20-minute ride from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping.
