Your leader headlined 'Time to quell the noise on patriotism' (February 26) has dangerous implications.

You are telling us to throw the spirit of law to the wind. What is unsaid (unwritten) explicitly in the mini-constitution (and by extension, any piece of legislation) can be construed as legal and open to interpretation.

This is the standard toolkit of some segments of the legal profession. No wonder they are sometimes called the 'devil's advocate'.

What is wrong with the central government's restatement that Hong Kong, being an integral part of China, be run by majority patriotic Chinese? Isn't this the same unsung and inherent prerequisite in the UK and the US, and for that matter every country on earth?

Does reminding the governing body and legislators that they should get their basics right first and do some soul-searching if they have deviated from their swearing-in oath, before they begin to embark on any political reform, amount to a 'noise' or a 'voice'?

It is sad that some of our legislators and officials, past and present, have to be 'lectured' on this home truth. It would be a tragedy and insult to Hong Kong if they were allowed to linger on in their positions.
