Alarmed by a growing number of computer security threats, Hong Kong law firm Haldanes has turned to Kowloon-based Network Box to help defend its sensitive data.

'We call in accountants to do audits, so we thought we should call in computer experts to look at security issues,' Haldanes managing partner Andrew Powner said.

'Many partners are not computer experts, so they do not understand the risks until a company like Network Box explains it to them.'

A specialist technology supplier to small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), Network Box sells internet security appliances loaded with multiple network-protection technologies including anti-virus and anti-spam software.

Haldanes was formed in Hong Kong in 1975 and set up a London office in 1993. It has a well-established local practice, which includes criminal law, media and entertainment, civil litigation and arbitration, commercial services and family law.

'We have lots of confidential information and we were worried about somebody intercepting this data. Any breach of our network would have serious repercussions. I type out documents detailing an entire defence. If an unauthorised person broke into our network and read it, it would be like leaving the documents in a taxi,' Mr Powner said.

'We are heavily reliant on technology. If our documents get corrupted, it could cause great damage. We wanted to protect our hard disks and provide security for our clients. We also wanted protection from viruses.' With Network Box, Haldanes recently implemented a system to keep online intruders, viruses and other malicious programs out of the firm's computer network.
