The new digital video camcorder from Samsung has a tough sell. While a solid little piece of technology, the Samsung VP-D270i has to stack up against Canon in the same price range and cheaper camcorders with similar features from JVC and Sharp.

The Canon MV 5i, which gives outstanding quality output for digital editing, is probably the best camera in the ultra-compact range.

Nevertheless, the Samsung VP-D270i, which weighs in at just 400 grams, gives very good quality video and is well worth the price tag.

Its ultra-compact design means it can be easily worn on a neck strap.

The new Samsung digital camcorder has a 0.8-megapixel CCD sensor, 10x optical zoom and up to 800x digital zoom ratio. The focal range is 2.7mm to 27mm.

The Samsung VP-D270i supports mpeg 4 compression technology, supporting a wide range of multimedia including those employing relatively low bit rates. The higher compression rate produces an image quality similar to DVD.

The camcorder has a fairly large 2.5-inch, 211K pixel LCD display which makes viewing and recording easier. To capture video in dark conditions, an infrared ray accessory is available.
