TAIWAN'S Wang Shi-ting (above) buried a ghost from the past when she beat American Marianne Werdel 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to win the $780,000 Digital Hong Kong Open yesterday at Victoria Park.
In winning her first major professional tournament, and earning $140,000, second seed Wang scored a significant psychological victory against a player who thrashed her five years ago in front of her home crowd.
The 19-year-old Wang recovered from 4-0 down in the final set to avenge that defeat.

''Marianne played so well that I thought I was going to lose,'' said Wang. ''I thought it was going to be the same as when I was 14 when she beat me very easily in Taipei.''
