The torture and abuse of young mother Fan Man-yee lasted a month before her death. From the moment she was dragged into 'Big Brother' Chan Man-lok's seven-room apartment on Granville Road, she entered a world that was dubbed a 'menagerie of madness' by an original defence lawyer.

Senior government counsel Michael Arthur had told the court that acting on the orders of Chan - a loan shark who also manufactured the drug Ice - Leung Shing-cho dragged Fan from her home in March 1999.

Fan, a prostitute and drug addict, had fallen into Chan's bad books by stealing $4,000 from his wallet. Although she paid the money back, plus $10,000 in interest, the loan shark demanded a further $16,000 in interest.

The idea was to hold her in the apartment until her social security payment came through or, failing that, make her pay it off through prostitution.

Soon after, Chan, Leung and Leung Wai-lun, 23, began a long campaign of inhumane bashings and torture.

The court has heard that Leung Wai-lun began to beat Fan with his fists and a water pipe while asking her where she would like to be struck. Wearing shoes, he then kicked her in the chest and abdomen about 50 times, counting each blow out loud.
