The American's sexy image is not suited to playing the goddess Shakti, critics say
Hindu organisations angry that American singer Tina Turner has been selected to play the lead role in the movie The Goddess could well scuttle the shooting of the film later this year.
The film is a production of celebrated international film-makers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Acharya Giriraj Kishore, the powerful leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said he would soon meet the VHP's representatives from Britain, who are visiting the Indian capital to discuss their objections to Turner portraying the goddess Shakti.
What Mr Kishore decides may well determine whether Turner, seeking to make a comeback to cinema, can play Shakti or not.
In Hinduism, Shakti is the female aspect of divinity and a symbol of female power and energy. She is worshipped in temples across India in many forms.
