Around 100,000 migrants from the Three Gorges Dam will be given free job training under the Chongqing government's bid to assist residents relocated for the project.

Yu Yuanmu, vice-mayor of Chongqing municipality, told Xinhua the government had established a new four-year skills coaching programme for people between 18 and 55 who have been affected by the controversial hydroelectric project on the middle reaches of the Yangtze river.

The schemes, to be implemented by various local governments, would be aimed at assisting the unemployed.

He said the goal was to help raise the competitiveness of the people so they could have the 'smooth and steady' conditions to become rich.

According to the report, the programme will focus on both rural and urban skills.

Rural migrants to be educated in methods to boost agricultural production in areas such as citrus farming, livestock herding, and fish farming.

Urban migrants will be trained to work in manufacturing, construction and appliance repair.
