Interstoff Asia's Directions trend committee has spoken - the trends for spring 2005 will range from calm and therapeutic to euphoric and revitalising.

The members of the committee, selected by Interstoff Asia because of their 'combined knowledge and wide experience in all fields of fashion, and ... the related areas of beauty, interiors and technology', came up with almost identical trend predictions while doing their forecast independently.

The committee came to the consensus that three moods will work together for next spring, bringing together light and dark tones and simple and uncomplicated fabrics to impart a mood of joyfulness and tranquillity.

The first element of the trend is cheery and sweet - think plastic Barbie.

The look is a combination of shiny, pearlescent materials that exude brazen glamour with playful and romantic patterns in Vichy checks, candy stripes or kitsch prints such as ponies, lollipops and cartoons.

The colour tones will be quintessentially sugar-sweet, such as bubblegum pink, peach parfait, key lime and aqua, working with 'exuberant tones' of sunshine, orangeade, chartreuse, lilac, hot pink and watermelon to create a look branded 'Lollipop' for spring 2005.

The second element of the trend is the 'Carousel' look, which is reminiscent of enigmatic cultures and decadent parties of the 1960s. The colours of this look are a contrast of hot and cold - mixing green and brown with fiesta red and orange glory, green and rich purples with turquoise and tidal blue accents, spiced up by wet and gel effects, disco sparkles and metallic copper.
