Minibus drivers are being advised to install Global Positioning Systems and closed-circuit televisions to combat robberies.

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong told the legislature yesterday that police were concerned about two minibus robberies carried out in the evening in the past four months.

'We would also advise drivers to put another licence plate inside their vehicles. If there are robberies, passengers can send the licence number to their families by mobile phones,' he said.

There were just two robberies at night on minibuses last year and 39 cases involving taxis.

In the latest incident last month, three armed robbers wearing masks boarded a minibus carrying 12 passengers and stole mobile phones.

Police would strengthen patrols at minibus terminuses and set up roadblocks, Mr Lee said. Although some hijacked minibus had passed through such checkpoints in the past, he insisted the measure was effective.
