A breakdown in communications with the government means local wholesalers continue their strike
Poultry farmers and government officials last night failed to break a deadlock on resuming live chicken sales despite some wholesalers agreeing to transport birds to retail outlets.
Wholesalers will remain on strike and have refused to co-operate after a three-hour meeting with the director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation.
Thomas Chan Chun-yuen said further meetings were needed to resolve the deadlock. 'We have tried to liaise with the wholesalers again but no progress has been made,' he said after the meeting.
A scheduled attempt to resume chicken sales failed early yesterday morning after transport workers were blocked from taking empty cages at wholesale markets in Cheung Sha Wan to the chicken farms for restocking.
Legislator Wong Yung-kan, who represents the agriculture sector, yesterday accused some industry leaders of pressuring wholesalers to continue their boycott.
An agreement to end the strike was said to have been reached on Tuesday between the farmers and the department.
