Mel Gibson's mission is obviously to shock his audience to attention and the savage imagery in The Passion of the Christ certainly achieves this aim, writes Matt Scott. It is a very Old Testament version of a New Testament tale. Wounds flow red, women wail and the Devil snarls out of every shadow. Gibson wants us to think long and hard. And judging by last night's preview at the JP Cinema in Causeway Bay, which stunned the audience into breathless silence, he has achieved his aim.
