Many in Hong Kong's entrepot industry welcome the re-election of President Chen Shui-bian because it will cause tension across the strait - and keep our trade role strong.

A win for KMT leader Lien Chan would smooth cross-strait trade and not be good for Hong Kong.

But I have another view. If war breaks out over the strait, an economic downturn in the mainland could have devastating effects on Hong Kong. Although we could maintain entrepot operations, Cepa and the individual travel scheme might break down.

A win for Mr Lien would bring welcome stability.
