Tiny digital cameras might look like gimmicky toys, but Sony's latest offering, the Qualia 016, is the real deal. The brand's high-end Qualia range of electronics, which also includes a digital projector, colour monitor and audio CD system, was launched last year.
This little camera measures only 69 x 24 x 17mm (about the size of two fingers) and weighs a mere 50 grams. But its compact size does not limit its versatility. It uses the same storage technology (Memory Stick Duo) as other Sony digital cameras, has a two-megapixel sensor with a 4x digital zoom lens and a tiny 0.55-inch LCD display. But the coolest things about Qualia 016 are its accessories. It comes in a sophisticated, black case containing 11 gadgets including a flash unit, wide conversion lens and remote control unit. It looks like a 1960s spy-camera kit.
Of course, technology like this doesn't come cheap. The Qualia 016 costs 380,000 yen (HK$27,600) in Japan and, not surprisingly, only about 130 have been sold worldwide since last September. It's not available in Hong Kong shops but potential buyers can call Sony Japan on 91 0570 09 0099.
