Who? New York-based jewellery designer Ippolita Rostagno began selling her personal range in New York in 1999. Her creations are now coveted by the likes of actresses Kate Hudson (below with Luke Wilson), Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron and Courtney Cox. J. Lo is believed to have bought five pairs of Rostagno's golden hoop earrings during a shopping spree, and Hudson is rarely seen without one of her gold bangles.
How did it happen? Born and raised in Florence, Rostagno always had a strong interest in fine arts and design. Having studied sculpture for five years, she left Italy in 1982 for the United States where she pursued English studies and later created a range of haute jewellery that was precious but still suited to daywear. In 1999 she unveiled her first collection and her designs were bought by Bergdorf Goodman. Drawing inspiration from everyday observations and her extensive travels, Rostagno's pieces are known for their versatility and unique silhouettes.
What do the designs look like? The Ippolita collection is divided into two themes: one features hammered metallic pieces, the other comprises delicate feminine necklaces and earrings. Her most recent collection uses sculptural influences in its geometric hammered necklaces and delicate golden chandelier earrings.
What does the designer have to say? 'Jewellery is something that is intimate and should make the wearer feel great about herself. I use a lot of gold in my designs because gold has an inherent value. I like the tactile quality of the metal and I like the permanence of metals ... There is too much wastage in our world, where everything has become disposable. I want my designs to have a permanent quality to them.'
Where are the designs available? Ippolita is available at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus in the United States.
