We often add the suffix '-ing' to a verb to form present participles, eg. 'Sally just bought a karaoke machine; she is singing with her friends.' Here, 'singing' is a verb. However, '-ing' words do not always serve as verbs, eg. 'Sally's singing is awful; I wish she would turn down the volume.' Here, 'singing' is a noun. (This kind of noun is usually uncountable.) Words ending with '-ing' can also be adjectives, eg. 'I find tennis a very exciting game.' Of course, there are '-ing' words which are not formed by adding '-ing' to a verb, eg. 'something' (line 40) and 'during' (line 44).

Read the story, circle all the '-ing' words, and decide if they are verbs, adjectives or nouns.
