A Swede  was given a taste of Invest Hong Kong's hospitality this weekend at the Rugby Sevens.

Invest Hong Kong, in case you had forgotten, has the arduous task of wooing investors to our shores, most recently pumping oodles of public funds into the controversial Harbour Fest extravaganza.

Its corporate box at the Sevens was rather embarrassingly uncrowded at Saturday's match, unlike neighbour UBS. Our Swedish woman, tired of standing in the nearby box, decided to rest her weary body in an unused Invest HK seat.

However, it took just seconds for Invest HK to alert security guards to  uproot the woman.

They may be happy to take Swedish money, but its weary nationals are another matter.

There may be no such thing as a free lunch but listed companies' financial data has generally been considered a giveaway. Not so at China Telecom (Hong Kong) it would seem. A financial analyst tells us that he called the locally listed behemoth in search of operating data following its results announcement two weeks ago. To his surprise, investor relations executive David Lu shot back that the data would be revealed only in return for research products that the firm usually charges for.

Unlucky

The boss's secretary is perhaps the most powerful person in any office. A public relations 'professional' tells us the following tale of playing the game. She formerly worked at a local utility and joining the firm was hard pressed to get face time with the firm's chairman. In despair she spent a year wooing his secretary until they came to be known as 'sisters' within the office. Alas the effort proved futile as the secretary soon after keeled over and died. Noting her despair, a director of the utility said with a wry drop of black humour: 'You have very bad luck.'
