Product: NEC N900 Price: To be confirmed Pros: The smallest, slimmest camera phone on the catwalk Cons: Remarkablely expensive
The N900 is the coolest phone released this year but not in terms of technology. In fact, as far as technology is concerned, this is a very ordinary handset.
What makes it stand out is its size. While other Japanese vendors have produced smaller handsets, nobody has yet combined this many features into such a slim and stylish case.
The N900 is just 84mm wide, 54mm high and 8.6mm deep, which makes it the slimmest handset we've yet reviewed. And unlike other ultra-compact mobiles, this one even manages to squeeze in a camera, with a mobile assist light and an acceptable optical zoom.
The other nice feature is the display. At 1.8 inches, this 65,000-colour TFT display is larger than you will find on many phones twice its size.
Standby time is comparable to any standard phone but talking does run the battery down quickly. So for travellers, NEC has built a sled-like external battery. This brings the phone up to a size comparable with an average mobile.
