Years ago, I predicted that the Macs of the future would not be highly stylised desk ornaments but invisible servants buried in a wall somewhere.

We would interact with them through everyday devices such as our car audio systems, our personal digital assistants and our televisions.

This month the first of these remote Mac interface devices arrived on the market and several demo units arrived at my doorstep.

After checking them out, I have come to the conclusion that we are at the dawning of the gadget age. These remote interface gadgets (RIGs) - the HomePod and the Squeezebox - were created to enhance home audio systems. They plug into your living room stereo/surround sound system and connect from there, wirelessly, to your Mac and beyond.

If you do not have an Airport Wireless network, not to worry. Both of these devices make a point of giving you every conceivable connection option to ensure you will be able to use them with your computer and stereo system.

Also, they are both equipped with remote controllers so you never have to get off the couch again after you have them set up.
