Your leader 'Protest violence does nothing to further cause' (April 3) expressed concern over the demonstration at the Central Government Offices on Friday.

I, however, see the demonstration as a healthy sign of a truly open and tolerant society.

Anger and frustration that has built up during the past weeks of political tension need to be released. The demonstrators did that for the people of Hong Kong, who aspire to democracy.

But, of course, everyone at the demonstration has to bear the consequence of his own action. This applies to the demonstrators, the police, government officials and reporters who were there.

As I see it, the demonstration has left no more than a few bruised arms and a couple of students being persecuted. Let's hope that this violent showdown will be the prelude to rational and peaceful discussion.
