A driver accused of being drunk when he was involved in a fatal traffic accident with a police constable was granted bail yesterday but ordered to surrender his driving licence.
Kowloon City Court magistrate Bruce McNair granted Wu Wing-cho, 28, cash bail of $20,000 at the request of defence barrister Alan So, who argued that Wu had been detained since March 18, the date of the car accident which killed Constable Chan Yip-shing, 28.
'The case is a traffic accident ... in normal cases defendants charged with this offence are given bail,' Mr So said. 'Is it because it is a police officer [who died] and [that] makes the case quite different?'
Mr So said Wu knew the consequences of the case and again extended his apologies to the victim and his family.
Wu had not entered a plea to one count of dangerous driving causing death and one of drink-driving.
He is charged with having a blood alcohol reading three times the legal limit.
