Authorities push for interoperability between different wireless tracking chip standards

China wants to lead the development of global standards for radio frequency identity (RFID) tags, a move that is likely to step up companies' adoption of the wireless tracking technology, according to an industry insider.

Chinese entrepreneur and chief executive of Sparkice, Edward Zeng, appointed in January to counsel and help co-ordinate the activities of the government's National RFID Tag Standards Working Group, disclosed a plan to form an alliance with Japan's Ubiquitous ID (uID) Centre to kick-start the move to get conflicting RFID standards to work together.

'We decided in the beginning to try and establish one global standard right away,' Mr Zeng said. He noted the EPCglobal RFID initiative, the Japan-backed uID program, and even proposed mainland RFID tag standards worked differently and were used on different radio frequencies.

He said China would have to lead this interoperability drive because the large western organisations pushing RFID implementation were heavily involved with Chinese manufacturers.

'We will make a series of announcements over the next few weeks,' he said.
