Hong Kong will send 38 of its top secondary and primary athletes to the 2004 Interport Athletics Championships on Saturday at the Wan Chai Sports Ground.
More than 150 athletes from Guangdong, Fujian and Macau and the SAR will compete in the competition. The competition will be separated into four categories - primary boys and girls and secondary boys and girls.
'The region's best athletes will be competing,' said Stephen Lee, senior sports executive of the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation.
The Hong Kong primary team were selected during trials held in January while the secondary schools will send champions from the Inter-School Athletic Championships last month.
Although the level of competition varies between the schools each year, Fujian generally field a good primary team while Guangdong are competitive at the secondary level, Lee said.
'In reference to past experience, I think Hong Kong will be second place in the overall secondary category. Hong Kong is stronger in track events rather than field. We also hope to have good results in the relays,' he said.
