Hong Kong's 1996 Olympic gold medallist Lee Lai-shan reminded the world's best that she was still the queen in light conditions by winning the fifth race of the Mistral World Championships in Cesmi, Turkey.
Racing on the scheduled rest day after strong winds had forced day three's women's races to be abandoned, the gentle breezes that allowed only one leg to be run worked in San San's favour as she distanced herself from third-placed New Zealander Barbara Kendall in the overall standings.
'She sailed very well proving that she is still capable of dominating the fleet in these light conditions,' said Hong Kong coach Rene Appel. 'San San had a good start and sailed the advantageous left side of the course, rounding the first mark in second behind Barbara Kendall.
'At the bottom mark Faustine Merret lead the fleet with San San in a close third position. San San then worked her way up to second to the top mark again, and into the lead on the last downwind to finish in first place.'
Unfortunately for the Hong Kong star, leader Alessandra Sensini of Italy maintained her consistency with a third-placed finish to add to her three wins.
The Sydney 2000 Olympics gold medallist leads the fleet with just six penalty points, after discarding one result. San San is second on 13, but her disqualification from race four means she cannot afford another bad leg if she is to stay on course for a podium finish.
