Two men charged with theft over the discovery of counterfeit notes in HSBC deposit machines appeared in North Kowloon Court yesterday. Student Shek Kin-yip, 21, and unemployed Liu Chun-fai, 25, each face one count of theft, which allegedly took place on April 8. They were said to have stolen nine bank cards in Mongkok. No plea was taken yesterday. The prosecution applied to adjourn the case until May 28 for police inquiries, fingerprints and DNA sampling. Principal Magistrate Garry Tallentire remanded the two defendants in custody. A third man, Lau Chun-hing, 21, will appear today in the same court, also charged with theft. HSBC and sister bank Hang Seng shut their 262 deposit machines after counterfeits were discovered last Friday. Services of 186 machines resumed on Wednesday. Hang Seng yesterday resumed operation of a further 17 machines at automated banking centres beside staffed branches.
