Shanghai is seeking native English speakers to step up teaching of the language in preparation for the World Exposition to be held in the city in 2010.
Pu Dong Education College President Gu Zhi-yue said Shanghai lacked teachers who were competent at spoken English.
'Most of the local English teachers are responsible for teaching English grammar, but few can speak fluent English because unlike Hong Kong, Shanghai does not have a westernised environment to promote the language,' he said.
The college was looking to recruit native English speakers for schools across the city using international agencies that would offer a work and travel package including accommodation, meals, air-tickets, and a monthly salary of 3,500 yuan.
'We are inviting native English speakers who are willing to practise spoken English with our students, and want to see more of our city. There is not much we can offer, but it will be a wonderful learning and travel experience,' Mr Gu said.
The college employs five to six foreign teachers to provide English training for teachers in Shanghai.
