The drama students of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts will stage The Miser, a masterpiece by French dramatist Moliere about the corrupting power of money.

The play has been translated into Cantonese by May Wu May-bo and is directed by academy drama lecturer Peter Jordan. The story revolves around Harpagon, a miser whose only real love is money. He struggles to increase his already enormous wealth to keep tight control on his children.

To avoid providing a dowry, he plans to marry his daughter to an old man. On the other hand, his spendthrift son has fallen in love but discovers that his father is his rival and new creditor.

The Miser will be staged from today until Saturday, at 7.45pm with a matinee at 2.45pm on the last day, at the Academy Studio Theatre. Tickets cost $90 (adults) and $45 (students) and can be obtained through HK Ticketing on 3128 8288.
