Hong Kong designs continue to impress a growing following of international buyers, with the Hong Kong Houseware Fair proving to be the premier showcase for local design talent.
Designer Samuel Choi, who majored in interior design before specialising in photo frames, mirrors and candleholders for Jove's Design & Contractor, said the strong international profile of the show was great for his export business. Mr Choi's unique designs, creatively combining the natural materials of wood and metal, are exported mainly to the United States and Europe. The US is his biggest growth market.
'I have been exhibiting at the Hong Kong Houseware Fair for five years and find it to be very good for business,' Mr Choi said.
Migo Development, which produces high-quality, hand-painted dinnerware, also reported an expanding export market to the US, Europe, the Middle East, South America and African countries. An in-house designer creates the ideas for the Hong Kong-based company, while production is done cost-effectively on the mainland.
Managing director Gordon Wong said: 'We are able to produce high quality, very professional dinnerware, which in turn appeals to overseas buyers. Made of earthenware to be very strong and durable, our products also stand out because of their sharp, bright colours.'
Lighter colours were used for the European markets, Mr Wong said, while strong, bold colours appealed more to American consumers.
