Friends yesterday expressed concern over the plight of a quadriplegic who has appealed to legislators to let him die.

'Ah Bun', 34, has been in Queen Mary Hospital since a somersault accident 13 years ago left him paralysed from the neck down.

On Monday, his impassioned appeal for legalised euthanasia - in which he said he felt 'totally useless' - was made public.

Friend Chow Chi-ming said he could understand why Ah Bun had asked to die.

'Can you imagine how difficult it is ... doing nothing, just staring at the ceiling every day,' said Mr Chow, of the Direction Association for the Handicapped.

'What he most needs is financial support for him to buy more advanced breathing equipment to help him go outdoors. It will cost $100,000 to $200,000.' A spokesman for the Social Welfare Department said the man had been given counselling.
