For motoring enthusiasts, it is about as close as you can get to owning a Formula One car.

No, the Mercedes on display at the Cyberport last night is not the McLaren-Mercedes driven by Kimi Raikkonen or David Coulthard.

But the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG - the safety car used at Formula One races - certainly has true sporting credentials, sprinting to 100km/h in less than five seconds. And it comes with a vario-roof - an electrically powered steel top that can disappear into the boot and convert the two-door coupe into an open-top sports car in just seconds.

The car is used at each grand prix to lead the pack for a lap before the start of each race. It comes out again if there is a serious accident on the track.

Famous owners of the SLK include US talk-show host Jay Leno.

Some 150 people in Hong Kong put in orders before the launch of the vehicle, and a spokeswoman for Mercedes-Benz China said they should expect to see their cars late next month. The models could be introduced to the mainland in July.
