Karen Cakebread wasn't born into a wine dynasty but she married into one, or the beginning of one at least. Her husband's parents founded Cakebread Cellars, a family business, in the Napa Valley in 1973. Karen is the winery's events director and international marketing manager. She and husband Steve lived in Hong Kong and Singapore in the 1980s and visit the SAR every year.
What do you like to eat when you're in Hong Kong? 'I love all kinds of noodles and the Indian restaurants here. When we lived here we often went to the Indian restaurants on Hollywood Road but they've changed a lot since I was last here, they've gone more upmarket. I like Gaddi's [at the Peninsula] for high-end dining.
I had a great meal at Spoon [at the InterContinental] last night - well-prepared food and interesting presentation.'
What restaurants do you plan to visit on this trip? 'There are a lot of places I'm interested in. Someone told me about the restaurants in One Peking Road [Tsim Sha Tsui] especially the sushi restaurant [Aqua Tokyo].'
What's your favourite city for food? 'San Francisco. There's a little bit of everything, especially great Vietnamese. The Napa Valley is a little more Mediterranean, so when I need ethnic I go to
San Francisco.'
