Fitness First managing director Kent Richards is going to war against gimmicks that promise to get rid of excess weight without any work.
Kent recently attended the world International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association conference in the US. The group is active in fighting the growing problem of obesity around the globe - but he warns that there are no shortcuts, despite the promises made on behalf of machines that are said to zap your fat away. To this end, he has pledged to organise workshops with nutritionists and fitness professionals who will advise the public at no charge, speaking out against what Kent believes are simply get-rich schemes at the expense of the public. Details of the workshops have yet to be arranged.
'Here in Asia, our youth are placing us at risk of being the USA of tomorrow [in terms of obesity],' he says. 'If we continue to allow the wrong message to reach the public, we'll spend the future fighting what could be avoided today. Respected academics including Jean Woo Ling-hong, of the Department of Public Health at Chinese University, have confirmed there is no quick-fix solution. The only solution is to have active lifestyles with healthy eating habits.'
