Protests aside, we must work within limits, says academic
The pro-democracy camp has started to study ways of achieving greater democracy after Beijing slammed the door on the introduction of universal suffrage in 2007.
Leading parties have stood firm on the demand for direct elections for the next chief executive and the entire legislature.
But individual politicians and activists concede they have to consider alternative proposals and continue the fight through the Legislative Council elections and demonstrations.
Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, a City University academic and moderate democrat, said apart from the pro-democracy camp's continuing fight for universal suffrage, other options should be explored within the limits set by Beijing.
'There should be a consensus reached in Hong Kong on when and how universal suffrage should be introduced so Beijing won't use it as an excuse to dismiss changes in the future,' he said.
