After much study and only very few hours of sleep, I put the finishing touches to a 200-page team paper this week.

And I thought university was going to be a piece of cake.

You see, my misconception of university life - which I thought would be filled with cultural events and travel - was the result of hearing the often quoted declaration: 'It's the best time of your life.'

I'm not going to dispute that. However, as with all things in life, you can't enjoy the good without tasting a bit of the bad.

The freedom to scour the 24-hour supermarket in the middle of the night for Godiva chocolate and raspberry truffle ice-cream is offset by the realisation that you've gained seven kilograms.

The happiness that comes from completing one of the most comprehensive projects in your life is accompanied by an overwhelming sense of fatigue.
